Junior Terrell Mack scored a career-high 34 points, including hitting 14 of 15 free throws, to lead the University of Hawaii at Hilo to a 66-59 win over Notre Dame de Namur on Sunday night at UHH Gym.

The Vulcans improved to 8-12 overall and 2-10 in the Pacific West Conference men’s basketball standings. It was the host’s first win since Jan. 9 when they defeated conference foe Academy of Art 69-62 in Hilo.

“We’re happy to get the monkey off our back,” UHH coach Jeff Law said. “It’s nice to get the win. It wasn’t the prettiest of things, but we still got the win and we needed one.”

Senior Zach Wilde followed Mack with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Kiel Myers had eight points and six rebounds.

Arron Mollet led NDNU with 16 points and Tyler Fricke had 13.

The visiting Argonauts dropped to 4-9 and 8-13, respectively.

Junior Kirsten Shimizu scored 10 points, including a clutch 3-pointer down the stretch, to spark the Vulcans (9-11, 6-6) to a 51-45 win over the Argonauts (5-16, 3-10).

Junior Jameia McDuffie had eight points and senior Hotia Vaaimamao and juniors Kirsty Imai and Shannon Rousseau seven apiece in a balanced UHH attack.

Trisha Malaspina led NDNU with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Emily Vore added 11 points.

The Argonauts led 20-19 at the intermission before the hosts outscored NDNU 32-25 in the second half.

“We struggled offensively and ran into some foul trouble,” UHH coach David Kaneshiro said. “I’m happy we kept our composure, kept our poise and found a way to win.”

The Vulcans battled the taller Argonauts evenly on the boards, with both teams pulling down 35 rebounds. But both squads also struggled shooting the ball — UHH hit 33 percent (17 of 51) from the field and NDNU a chilly 29 percent (11 of 38). The hosts also made 14 of 20 free throws while the Argonauts hit 22 of 31.

HPU sweeps

Hawaii Pacific University held off UHH in an afternoon doubleheader on Sunday, beating the Vulcans 9-8 and 3-1 on Oahu.

The host Sea Warriors (4-0) also swept the Vulcans (0-4) on Saturday, 17-7 and 14-7.

“We played a lot better today,” UHH coach Joey Estrella said. “In the first game, we scored five runs in the ninth and almost pulled it out. In the second game, their pitcher did a really good job and got the win.

“We didn’t hit as well as we did Saturday, but overall we played better today on defense and in pitching. That’s a positive for us.”

In the opener, junior Larry Valdes went 4 for 4, including two doubles, and drove in three runs to lead UHH.
